Heonhwa-ro Road
It was a stage of Hyangga Heonhwaga, a folk song of the Silla Dynasty
Introduction
The name of Heonhwa-ro Road is orginated in Hyangga, Korean folk songs. There is a background story of the name, Heonhwa. When Sunjeonggong became a Gangneung viceroy and was on his way to go to Gangneung, his wife, Suro vicereine, asked to pick a rhododendron at a cliff of a beach. However, nobody acted among travelling companions because it was dangerous. At that time, an old guy who was leading a cattle, picked the flower and sang for her. The song is Heonhwaga. Heonhwa-ro Road is from Nakpung intersection in Okgye-myeon to Jeongdonjin Station three-way intersection in Jeongdongjin-ri, and the road has a fine view.
Tourist guide
Heonhwa-ro Road is the closest road from the ocean in Korea. It is a beach road from Simgok Port, under Jeongdongjin, to Geumjingan River. Jeongdongjin is well known for watching sunrise, so it is recommended to drive on the beach road after appreciating sunrise. Listening to the waves and admiring the blue ocean on Heonhwa-ro Road may make unforgettable memories.
Tourist Tips
There is Geumjin Beach when a driver advances towards the coast at Heonhwa-ro Road. This beach road is a 2km long roadway on marine terrace. It connects between Geumjin-ri and Simgok-ri and is surrounded by strange rock formations and cliffs. Metal fences are built around the coast for safety, and there are a small parking lot and some benches for visitors to appreciate the terrific ocean view.

Anbo Hiking Trail
A hiking trail that climbs along the coastline
Introduction
The Anbo Hiking Trail is located in the Aninjin-ri area of Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon State. Previously, Gangneung’s main hiking areas were centered around Daegwallyeong and Odaesan Sogeumgang. However, following the 1996 North Korean submarine infiltration incident, this security-themed hiking trail was newly established. After the incident brought significant attention to the area, Gangneung City organized and improved the trail in 1997, led by the Gangneung City Hall Mountaineering Club. The trail was named “Anbo” (meaning security) to emphasize the importance of strengthening national security. The nearby Anbo Park, originally developed together with an exhibition hall displaying the captured North Korean submarine, was later renamed Unification Park as tensions between North and South Korea eased.

Thanks to its stunning natural scenery, the Anbo Hiking Trail has been selected as a course for nationwide hiking competitions. Its scenic surroundings are so impressive that many workplaces and organizations host their own hiking events here. The nearby areas of Aninjin and Jeongdongjin, which can serve as starting or ending points, are well-known tourist destinations in their own right, offering a variety of attractions and dining options that draw numerous visitors. Along the coastal road, you will also find Unification Park, the North Korean Submarine Exhibition Hall, Deungmyeong Nakgasa Temple, and Haslla Art World, making it an excellent destination for families and group travelers.
Travel Tips
The Anbo Hiking Trail features two main courses.Course 1 begins at the Samgeori intersection in Aninjin 2-ri, Gangdong-myeon, and passes through Samubong Peak, Gwaebangsan Mountain, Gwaeiljae Pass, Dangjip, and Hill 183 before reaching Jeongdongjin. The total distance is 8.3 km and takes approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes.Course 2 starts from the submarine infiltration site and continues through Samubong Peak, Gwaebangsan Mountain, Gwaeiljae Pass, Dangjip, Hwabi Pass, and Cheonghaksan Mountain. The distance is 7.7 km and takes about 2 hours and 35 minutes.Both courses offer convenient access to harbors, breakwaters, sandy beaches, train stations, restaurants, and cafes at their starting or ending points, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy refreshments alongside their hike.

Jeongdongjin
The station located closest to the sea
Introduction
"Jeongdongjin" is a beach located at Jeongdongjin-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. This is named after the episode that there was a ferry in the straight east side of Gwanghwamun Gate of Hanyang. This is famous as one of the best sunrise spots in the country, drawing many tourists for sunrise of the new year.

"Jeongdongjin" is known as a filming site of a famous TV drama titled "Hourglass." It becomes famous as a tourist attraction, since a sunrise train started to run from Cheongnyangni Station. This sunrise train can be available from many stations nationwide, including Busan, Dongdaegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Jeonju and Chuncheon. Around Jeongdongjin, there are many tourist sites such as various beaches, Hourglass Park and Hwanseon Cave.

"Jeongdongjin" was known as a place where a king had offered sacrifice to the Dragon King of the four seas from the Silla Dynasty. Now, it has become a sunrise attraction by holding Millennium Sunrise Festival as a state-designated event in 2000. There is Jeongdongjin Station, which has been listed to the Guinness Book of Records as the station located to be closest to the sea in the world. There are nearby tourist attractions such as "Rail Bike" for looking around "Jeongdongjin" and beaches of "Jeongdongjin" and "Deungmyeong," so that visitors can enjoy bathing with families or friends.

Jeongdongjin Beach
Beach with a way station closest to the sea in the world
Introduction
Gangneung Jeongdongjin Beach is located at Jeongdongjin-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung. Jeongdongjin is famous as the best place for watching the first sunrise of a new year. This beach is about 250m long and has an area of 13,000㎡. Sea bathing is available from July to August. It is also possible to collect clams, mussels, sea urchins and seaweed from the rocks around.

Jeongdongjin Beach is famous for having a way station closest to the sea in the world. Therefore, guests can see the wide ocean right upon getting off Jeongdongjin Station. It also has a convenient transportation with trains going between Gangneung and Jeongdongjin. The beach is so large that there are three places suitable for sea bathing; in front of Jeongdongjin Station, Hourglass Park and Jeongdongjin Embankment.

Then, a park in front of such filming site was named as "Hourglass Park." Moreover, Hourglass Beach has such a wide sandy beach that it can draw many frequent visitors. It also allows people to enjoy many tourist attractions together, including Hourglass Park, Sculpture Park in the south and Heonhwa-ro Road. There is a park on the hill 700m away from the south of Jeongdongjin, commanding a panoramic view toward the East Sea, beaches, the train station and coastal roads. Being close to Jeongdongjin, this Sculpture Park exhibits many beautiful sculptures, so that lots of families and couples can enjoy visiting here. Sculpture Park is equipped with convenient facilities like a store, a train cafe and a boathouse cafe. A giant boat-shaped condominium was built in 2001. Visitors can enjoy staying overnight thanks to this Sun Cruise condominium with about 600 rooms. The boathouse cafe takes on an actual boat shape, including a restaurant, a cafe and an observatory. Although it is just a model sitting on the land, visitors can feel as if they were floating at sea while taking a picture there. Being close to the sea, visitors can see many boat-shaped buildings, which look fascinating beyond imagination.

Okgye Beach
Beach that has clean and vast stretch of sandy beach and old pine forests
Introduction
Situated in san-105, Geumjin-ri, Okgye-myeon, the beach boasts clean and vast stretch of sandy beach and old pine forest. Influenced by streams of water flowing from nearby Seokbyeongsan Mountain into the ocean, the water is comparatively warm. Okgye Beach is a lovely vacation spot for anyone and has great features suitable for family or group tourists.

Around Okgye Beach are Gangneung Industrial Complex and Okgye Port which is famous as a trading port as well as a fishing port. The beach is always visited by many fishing lovers all year around. We encourage you to bring or borrow a fishing rod and have an exciting fishing experience only sea fishing can provide. There are plenty of good restaurants around the area you can enjoy after fishing.

Okgye Beach that has clean and vast sandy beach and old pine forests offers an astonishingly scenic view. The view of wide sandy beach and green pine forests is never to be found in other regions. Crystal clear water of the East Sea makes it hard to measure its depth, and sun reflecting on sparkling blue sea is indescribably beautiful. Next to the beach, there is Okgye Port that is famous for strong wave and for beautiful views in winter at the same time. Especially, Okgye port was designated as a port for cement transportation as a part of Okgye city planning project, so Gangneung Industrial Complex was built next to the port. The complex now takes an important part of cement business in Gangwon-do Province.
