지극히 사적인 그림생활

강릉시립미술관 교동은 웹툰 작가의 그림생활을 엿볼 수 있는 기획전시 《지극히 사적인 그림생활》을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 디지털 웹툰의 파격적인 해학과 서사를 회화의 형태로 재해석 했습니다. 단순히 웹툰의 화면을 캔버스로 옮긴 것을 넘어, 디지털 드로잉과 유화 회화 사이의 경계를 탐구하고자 합니다. 

대한민국 웹툰 작가로서 가장 독보적인 스타일을 구축한 귀귀 작가는 네이버 등에 웹툰을 연재하며 두터운 마니아 팬을 보유하고 있습니다. 2007년 웹툰 <해피 엔딩>으로 데뷔했으며, <정열맨 시즌1~2>, <열혈 초등학교>, <전학생은 외계인>, <귀귀 갤러리>, <김치맨>, <낚시 신공>, <뉴 바이블>, <호러 특급>, <배짱이> 등을 연재했습니다.

"웹툰 작가의 이중생활"

작가는 언젠가부터 웹툰의 이야기 끝에 유화 작품 이미지를 덧붙여 소개해왔습니다. 컴퓨터 모니터 화면에 펜으로만 드로잉 하던 웹툰 작업을, 캔버스로 옮겨와 유화물감으로 채색한 회화 작품을 선보인 것입니다. 이를 통해 우리는 작가의 웹툰 만화가 아닌, 그야말로 그림생활을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 스마트폰 속 작은 이미지로만 접하던 그림을 실제로 전시실에서 대형 작품으로 만나볼 수 있습니다. 보통의 미술 작품들은 작품 속 공백을 관람자 스스로 유추하고 느끼곤 하지만 귀귀 작가의 작품에는 웹툰 속 서사를 함께 담고 있습니다. 작품 옆 QR코드를 통해 작품 속 숨겨진 스토리가 웹툰으로 연동되니 함께 감상하시길 바랍니다. 

강릉시립미술관 전시에서는 그동안 공개한 적 없는 유화 작품 신작도 최초로 공개합니다. 다소 과격하지만 풍자가 스며있고 경쾌한 이 작품들은, 만화와 회화의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나듭니다. 본 전시를 통해 웹툰 작가의 이중생활, 그의 지극히 사적인 그림생활을 조명합니다.

Extremely Private Painting Life

The Gangneung Museum of Art Gyodong presents the special exhibition “Extremely Private Painting Life,” offering a glimpse into the artistic life of a webtoon artist. This exhibition reinterprets the bold humor and narrative of digital webtoons in the form of painting. This work goes beyond merely transferring webtoon images onto canvas. It seeks to explore the boundary between digital drawing and oil painting. 

GuiGui, one of South Korea’s most distinctive webtoon artists, has cultivated a devoted fan base through serial publications on platforms like NAVER. He made his debut in 2007 with the webtoon “Happy Ending,” and has since serialized works such as “Man of Passion Season 1 and 2,” “Passionate Elementary School,” “Transfer Student Is An Alien,” “GuiGui Gallery,” “Kimchi Man,” “New Fishing Skills,” “New Bible,” “Horror Express,” and “Guts.”

"The Double Life of a Webtoon Artist"

At some point, the artist began appending oil painting images at the end of his webtoon episodes. What was once a digital pen drawing on a computer screen has been translated onto canvas and completed with oil paints. Through this, we gain insight not only into his career as a webtoon artist but also into his broader artistic practice. Viewers can now experience these images—once confined to small smartphone screens—as large-scale works in a gallery setting. While typical artworks often leave interpretive gaps for viewers to fill, GuiGui’s pieces incorporate the narrative elements of his webtoons. By scanning the QR code next to each piece, visitors can access the hidden stories embedded within the artwork, linked directly to the webtoons. We encourage you to enjoy them together. 

The Gangneung Museum of Art exhibition will unveil, for the first time, new oil paintings that have never been publicly displayed before. Though at times provocative, these witty and spirited works fluidly cross the boundaries between comics and fine art. Through this exhibition, we spotlight the double life of a webtoon artist—and his very private drawing life.
